When Emotions Hurt: Using EFT to Heal Your Body and Mind

Your Body Is Speaking—Are You Listening? Discover Relief with EFT Tapping

Have you ever noticed how your body reacts to your emotions? That knot in your stomach before a big presentation, the tension in your shoulders after a stressful day, or the pounding headache that seems to come out of nowhere? These aren’t random occurrences. Your body and emotions are in constant dialogue, and sometimes, your body speaks louder when your mind refuses to listen.

The Hidden Link Between Emotions and Physical Pain

Our emotions aren’t just fleeting feelings; they’re deeply tied to our physiology. Stress floods our bodies with cortisol. Fear triggers adrenaline. And when we suppress these emotions—whether out of habit, fear, or societal conditioning—they don’t just disappear. They get stuck, manifesting as physical discomfort or chronic pain.

Think about it: Have you ever experienced a tight jaw, a sore neck, or a sensitive stomach? These physical sensations might be your body’s way of holding onto unprocessed emotions. That tight jaw could be unspoken frustration. That sore neck might be the weight of responsibilities you feel you’re carrying alone.

Pain is often a messenger, urging us to pause and address the emotions we’ve been avoiding.

But how do you release these emotions? That’s where Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) comes in.

How EFT Tapping Works

EFT, often called “tapping,” is a simple yet powerful method that helps release emotional intensity and the physical symptoms that come with it. It combines modern psychology with ancient acupressure, using your fingertips to gently tap on specific meridian points on your body while focusing on the emotions or physical sensations you want to address.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Identify the Problem: Pinpoint what’s bothering you—whether it’s a physical sensation like a headache or an emotion like anxiety. Rate its intensity on a scale of 1 to 10.

  2. The Setup Statement: While tapping on the side of your hand, acknowledge the problem and affirm self-acceptance. For example: “Even though I have this pounding headache, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

  3. The Tapping Sequence: Tap on specific points on your head and upper body (like the eyebrow, side of the eye, and collarbone) while repeating short phrases about the issue, such as “this pounding headache.” I teach you all of the acupoints in less than 2 minutes in this video here.

  4. Check-In: After a round of tapping, take a deep breath and reassess the intensity of your issue. Many people notice a significant reduction in both physical pain and emotional distress. Learn how to track your progress here.

Tapping works by sending calming signals to the amygdala, the part of your brain responsible for the fight-or-flight response. It tells your body that it’s safe to relax, breaking the cycle of stress and pain.

What Is Your Pain Trying to Tell You?

Your body is wise, and pain is often its way of getting your attention. It’s not just a nuisance; it’s a messenger. When you experience physical discomfort, it’s worth asking yourself: What emotion might be living there?

EFT offers a way to listen to your body and release the emotional charge behind the pain. It doesn’t erase memories or problems, but it helps you approach them from a calmer, more empowered perspective.

Your Invitation to Heal

Your body is your ally, not your enemy. The pain and discomfort you feel aren’t there to punish you—they’re there to guide you. They’re invitations to look deeper, to heal what’s hurting on an emotional level.

If you’re ready to explore this connection, EFT can help. I’ve created a free Tapping Basics playlist on my YouTube channel, where you can learn everything from where to tap to what to say. And there's guided sessions in the playlist Recovery: Overcoming the Physical Symptoms of your Emotions with EFT on my YouTube channel www.youtube.com/@EFT_TapOnThat.
